Had a couple of opportunities to get out and fish a little over the holiday weekend. I'd picked up a couple of TFP Pro Series flyrods for Christmas - a 5
wt and a 2 wt. I used the 5 wt a good bit during the spring and a few weeks back decided it was time to give the 2 a good workout on some local bass and
bream.
Saturday morning I headed over to my sis-n-law's 'other' house which is just up the road from our house and sits on a lice little lake. Was a bit foggy when I got there...
but the fog would burn off soon enough. Turned out things would be a bit slow but I did manage one nice bass on a Stealth Bomber. That little 2 wt has a surprising amount of backbone and will cast a Stealth Bomber quite well. Handled the bass pretty well too. Its quickly becoming my favorite rod...
Only had about an hour to fish Saturday and that was it until today (Monday) when I decided to load up the yak and head over to our local reservoir lake. The lake has changed a lot over the past couple of years. The county water authority drained the lake a couple of years ago to rebuild the spillway to serve a new water production plant. In the mean time lots of weeds grew on the dry lake bed and some of the way too numerous carp (grassies and common) died off or were relocated, a combination which now makes the lake much more habitable for gamefish.
Spent a couple of hours paddling and casting and not having much luck in general until I decided to head to a spot that has been good to me in the past. Its a little pocket with a deep creek channel running though it. The channel used to be 2-3 feet deep, now, thanks to a little beneficial erosion while the lake level was down, its 4-5 feet deep with abundant weed growth on the bottom. Looks like this:
The combination of a little current and fresh water, weeds for cover and a little depth made a great hiding place for several bass like this:
Caught 5 or 6 bass for the day and just a couple of bream. Headed home around noon to chill for a little while during the afternoon then enjoy a nice cigar while I grilled some Louisville Wings and corn on the cob.
Hope all had a fine holiday weekend.
Last, but definitely not least, Many thanks to those who gave it all for our freedom and many thanks to those that continue to serve.
