Yesterday must have been my lucky day. Had an opportunity to fish Callaway pop up. Even though the weather looked
questionable in the morning I knew I needed to go even if I might get rained on...hey, its only rain and the fish are already wet.
By the time I got down to the flyshop in the afternoon the skies had started to clear and it looked like a good afternoon might be in store. I had no idea just how good it was going to be. As I walked into the shop Julie Stalnaker, a good friend of mine happened to be there taking care of some things for the FFF SE Conclave with Carl and as luck would have it she decided to spend the rest of the afternoon fishing instead of heading back to Atlanta.
We loaded up our gear and headed over to Upper Falls, one of the lakes on the property that I've had good luck on before. We spent as few minuted getting rigged up then got down to business. Julie scored first and I wasn't far behind. I started out with a black rubber legged dragon behind a fire tiger colored stealth bomber and was finding enough bream like this one to keep things interesting
After I'd caught several I began to notice that I was getting quite a few hits on the bomber as well as the dragon so I took the dragon off. As the day wore on and the shadows were getting long I decided to go to a darker color and tied on a black bomber. Thats the last change I'd make for the rest of the day. Here's why:
The big bream weren't all that was hitting. The bass were in a very aggressive mood and in many cases would charge out of the weeds or brush at the bomber - wish I had some video of those. Sizes ranged from yearling dinks to about 2 pounds. Here's a nice one I stuck and Julie with one she was proud of:
Fish weren't all we caught. I managed to cast over a snapping turtle. I began to strip my bomber back and in the glare I thought the turtle had moved - nope. Oops! Needless to say, he wasn't too happy.
Fortunately I'd just stuck his shell behind his neck and I managed to get my bomber back without him getting hold of my fingers.
All in all we probably caught 60-80 fish each, a nice mix of bluegill, a few shellcrackers and lots of bass. I haven't had that much fun in a long time!
