Migrating Stripers from NJ, VA have arrived officially at Cape Cod...looking at the weekend of May 16-17 for a Bass Pond Saltwater Rodeo get together to do some shore fly-fishing... looking at possible Barnstable Harbor (off of Scudder Lane and Rendevous Lane) or nearby Sandy Neck Beach (7miles of beach) ...High tide is 4:45am and 5:29 pm on the 16th and 5:40 am and 6:19 pm on the 17th of May. We did this several years back and had a blast. Suggest we fish 3-5 hours on either or both days around high tide time. This is prime time of the year before summer parking rules are enforced with parking stickers

For those who have not tried this , it is a lot of fun and beautiful scenery. Great photo opprotunity for the website to share with...Waders, a good 9 foot 8wt or 9wt fly rod with intermediate or sink tip fly line, salt water leaders with clouser, deceivers or sand eel imitations are the flies of choice. Stripping basket is optional. Hopefully the wind will be at our back for easier casting. Also if anyone has alternate suggestions for this event, please jump in... moving to find where the bait located is the key to success...so we may move if one area doesn't produce...

So far Alec and myself are interested in tussling with some strong fighting stripers...Do we have any other member who are interested. Looking to do this inexpensively, Dun-kin Donuts for coffee, MacDonald's for lunch or supper to make things easy...How many other members are interested?

Let's get a headcount...

Estuary fishing is my most favorite thing in life! ( Well closely tied with bassbugging anyway.) As of right now I don't have any commitments and believe I can make it at least the first night if not both.
Please keep me posted in any planning and let me know ASAP where the meeting point will be.

Count me in for Saturday, Dunkin for coffee and MacDonalds sound fine. During the week have to go to Long Island to take care of family stuff. I should be able to rest on Friday to catch a ton of bass and being with old friends. AJ

Great! Looks like its going to be a good Saltwater gathering...Hopefully the weather and fish will cooperate...hearing reports of stripers starting to show up around the Cape...come on Warm Weather!!!

Ok fellas if you need some incentive to get out and fish here ya go. I headed out late tonight with the intentions of going after my first striper of the year. Destination was a pretty reliable schoolie spot and thats all I was after. Well I arrive and can see loads of activity right off the bat. The tide was running strong and a good number of fish working. Of course I am excited. Got the old vintage Orvis Clearwater 8wt and Sci Angler II reel. I picked the reel up second hand last year and hardly looks like it was ever used maybe once or twice. I had the spool off when I was rigging at home. Well don't you know I start working some line out the end of the rod while I stripping line off the reel and just as I get enough line in the air to fire off a cast I hear a splash! Look downward to my right where I heard the noise and theres my spool in the water. Doh! Apprently the catch on the spool wasn't tight. Then it got sand in it and I couldn't get the darn thing to lock closed. Fish are busting like crazy in the current in front of me so going home isn't an option. Luckily I had the Leatherman Miro (love that thing) and I loosened the screws on the spool cap enough to get the catch to slide over and lock. Once that operation was done I got my line regrouped in the stripping basket and tried again. First cast came up a bit short as the line still needed stretching. But second cast goes out clean layed out nicely and dropped the Crystal Schminnow right in the zone. Count to two and I get a solid take. Dead drifting it. But somethings wrong. This fish is stripping line thru my hand like nothing and it just keeps going and going and going. I'm like what the heck?? This place is schoolie land there's not supposed to be big fish here? Well after a very exciting battle with me eventually getting him on the reel and fortunately the drag was set just about right I did land him.WOW! I am pumped my first striper of 2009 on the fly rod and its 29 Inches. Sweet! A bit of panic at first as I had no tape so I did a rough check and decided it had to be a keeper. So home he went. I did manage another keeper shortly there after which I released and caught about 8 more fish and lost another definete keeper. So there you have it the stripers are here go get em!

Great way to start the season for sure!! My season usually starts with a few sub 20" fish. THat said, the first wave is usually followed closely by a few large fish. Two big fish in one early season night is a rare thing for sure though.

Couldn't resist. Went back for more tonight. Tide was a little higher, wind was blowin and it was raining when I arrived. But by the time I left all had settled down and the fish were bitin good. Managed another just barely keeper and several nice fish in the 23-24 inch class. Ahhh spring

Jeff, you're killing us... I went out to a spot off the Taunton River but didn't get a bump...you must be holding your mouth right

Suggestion for next weekend's Saltwater Rodeo, recommend that we can meet on Saturday morning at 8:30 am to fish Cotuit on the outgoing tide at

For those who can't make the morning trip, we can meet at Burger King (no McDonald in the general area) 12 noon time to fish Barnstable Harbor on the incoming tide

Wee Hooker thanks for the offer to ride. Coming down with Trader. I have never fished Cotuit before - I understand it can be crowded as for parking, plus weekend traffic will that be a problem?

Count me in for Saturday!! Looking forward to meeting some new folks and hopefully hooking up with my first 09 striper!! I had one or two good bumps last weekend, but no solid takes.

As this is my first post on this site, I suppose I should introduce myself as well...

My name is Tyler and I have been fly-fishing since I was 12 and pretty much exclusively since I was 18, though I do still have a basic spinning rod burried in the closet. I grew up in Montana, went to college in Oregon, then spent some time back in MT and in CO before moving to Phoenix for grad school. Having had access to many good quality trout streams all my life, moving to Phoenix was a bit of a shock to my system and for the first time in my life I spent a year or two when I did not go fishing at all. Then I realized that without fly-fishing, I was not a very happy person. I then realized that with some more travel time, AZ did offer some good trout fishing, and that fishing the desert lakes for warmwater fish was just as fun, or even more so as it presented a new challenge. My wife and I moved to Boston from Phoenix in March 08 and I have been greatly enjoying exploring MA ponds and growing more sucessful persuing warmwater species with the long rod. I was also buying gear for stripers before we even left AZ and while my many hours in the salt last season only resulted in one small schoolie landed, I am addicted and greatly looking forward to another season! Can't wait for Saturday!

Just pull up a chair and jump in the forum with the group. I think you'll find some great folks in this group, looking forward to chasing some Schoolies with you on Saturday...

Barnstable Harbor is historically better on the incoming tide ....looking for some promising spots on the outgoing tides around Barnstable/Cotuit in the morning... Nothing frim/open for suggestions... Oregon Beach, Loop Beach & Riley Beach, in Cotuit, or Bone hill or Blish Point in Barnstable...Scorton Creek in Sandwich.....we can finalize on Saturday ... Heck! as long as we are fishing, life is good...

What a turnout for the Rodeo!!! This is going to be great, so far we have:

Looks like I will probably just be able to join in the fun for the incomming tide, so I will meet you at the King in West Barnstable.

Also, as I am relatively new to targeting stripers, any fly recommendations you expect to be good for this time of year would be greatly appreciated. Am I right that somewhat small and skinny patterns are best now, as opposed to large deceivers and clousers? Or is that a misguided gut feeling?

I'll likely only make it for the afternoon trip. Lets hope for some overcast weather. Never been a fan of mid-day striper fishing this early in the season.
Welcome Trico, There are some pics of suitable flies in the beginning of this thread. Sandeels, (chartruce/white) clousers and simple, sparcely dressed streamers ( like the rays fly, deciever, etc) in the 2-4" range are fine. Bait isn't huge this time of year. Not sure how late we'll fish but some all balack flies (like an eel punt) are great for the evening .
