Interesting book on pickerel

Anyone ever see this one?

Found it at a used book store in Long Beach, California during a business trip last week. I've never heard of this fellow or this book. It's got to be one of the only full books devoted to pickerel in the lexicon.

Hi Joe - thats a good find! I have that book too - it was Bob Gooch's first book, and the only title devoted entirely to pickerel. He also wrote a very good book on squirrel hunting - the best one on the subject. It was out of print for many years and only recently reprinted. He is quite old now but still around - I think he lives in MD. or DE. This is a great time of year for pickerel fishing! Alec

It certainly makes me wish I were back in New England - I haven't caught a chain pickerel in better than 10 years. A few pike, yes. No chains. Did take one red-fin out of the Great Miami River, though.

I may make a pickerel pilgrimage one of these days.

I don't know anything about pike and pickerel. I catch bass, bluegill and sunfish. I occasionally catch a catfish---I'd love to catch one of the big carp I see.

Where would I find pike and pickerel?

You don't say where you live, but you should know that the natural range of pickerel is almost entirely east of the Adirondacks. Pike, of course, are much more widely spread in the nothern latitudes. If you live south of the Mason Dixon line and west of the big hills you're S.O.L.

Two good resources - Pike on a Fly by Barry Reynolds is an excellent book to help you know where to look for and how to present to pike and musky. Carp on the Fly by Barry Reynolds, Brad Befus and John Berryman is the definitive work on fly fishing for carp. Once you read that and put the ideas into practice you'll find carp to be the most powerful and challenging target in fresh water.

Bob Gooch is from Virginia. He is a prolific and very popular outdoor writer of both books and magazine articles. His work covers fishing and hunting subjects and often appears in
Virginia Wildlife and other regional publications.

I haven't really given it a read, just a quick page flip. It looks interesting but not necessarily ground breaking. Some great pics of big chains, though.
